A 10-year-old boy who threw an SOS sign out the window because he was bored to be locked in at home in southwest China on New Year’s Eve sparked a police search in case somebody was in danger, according to a newspaper report.

The boy living in Chongqing had seen similar ploys in movies when people wanted to attract help so he drew the SOS sign on a piece of cloth and threw it outside as he wanted to go out and play with other children, the Chongqing Morning News reported.

The cloth was found by a neighbour who alerted the police.

Officers came and began a house-to-house search, fearing somebody might need help, according to the article.

Children who knew the boy told the policemen who had made the sign.

The boy was quoted as saying he never believed the police would get involved and take it seriously.

He was warned by officers not to try anything similar in the future.
