A pair of Chinese tourists have gone missing and are presumed dead after they were swept away by giant waves while taking photos by rocks on a beach in California, Chinese media reported.

The couple and their son had been part of a Chinese tour group sightseeing on Pebble Beach in Monterey Peninsula on Saturday morning, news portal Chinaqw.com reported.

The couple reportedly went against the tour guide’s advice and moved close to the rocks and water to take photos near them, the report said.

They were taking photos when rogue waves crashed onto the rocks.

Firefighters said one victim fell into the water and the other victim jumped in to try and save the person, according to Californian news portal Ksbw.com.

Both were swept out to sea.
