Three people have been injured after firecrackers set off an explosion in an underground septic tank in central China during celebrations for Lunar New Year.

Chongqing Television reported that the accident took place on Sunday afternoon in the city after an eight-year-old girl slipped a lit firecracker through a manhole cover into an underground septic tank, ignoring a warning sign which specifically forbids firecrackers.

The explosion ruptured the street and loose concrete blocks hit the girl on her forehead. the girl was accompanied by her adult sister and another female relative aged 20, and both women sustained bone fractures.

A relative of the three, surnamed Jiang, said when he discovered the eight-year-old, she was covered in blood. He did not initially realise his two other relatives had also been injured as they were buried under concrete rubble.
