A young Russian couple who ran out of money while backpacking in China broke into a hospital in a small town where they planned to spend the night, mainland media reported.

However, they were discovered by staff and a doctor ended up coming to their aid – by paying the cost of a room for them at a nearby hotel.

The unidentified couple had been planning to travel from Chengdu, in Sichuan province, to Kunming, in Yunnan province, during the Lunar New Year holiday, the Phoenix Television affiliated news website reported on Monday.

While hitch-hiking they managed to get seats on a bus travelling from Chengdu, but later discovered that it had taken them to Yibin, another Sichuan city, instead.

Having already run out of money and with nowhere to stay last Wednesday they broke into the local hospital where they decided to stay the night, the report said.

They were discovered by hospital staff, but as the couple do not speak any Chinese, a duty doctor called his son-in-law who speaks English, and he was able to help communicate with them.

The doctor then took the couple to a nearby hotel, where he paid the cost of their room.

The couple, who were not believed to have faced any charges over the break-in, expressed their appreciation for the doctor’s kindness by asking to pose for a photograph with him.

They left Yibin the next day.
