Chinese father offers reward for return of stolen phone containing photos of dead baby daughter

Pickpocket stole phone, containing thousands of pictures of the child, while parents were at Hubei hospital on the day she died

A father in central China has offered a reward of 2,000 yuan (HK$2,250) to anyone who finds and returns his wife’s stolen mobile phone, which contains thousands of photographs of their late infant daughter, who died from leukaemia.

The man, surnamed Tian, from Wuhan, Hubei province, left a post on his Weibo account on Tuesday, asking his fellow netizens to help him recover the phone, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

His wife’s iPhone was stolen by a pick-pocket on February 1 – the same day that the couple’s eight-month-old daughter died, he said.

“After battling leukaemia for 111 days, my beloved daughter decided to leave me and her mother behind,” Tian wrote in the Weibo post.

His heartfelt post immediately went viral on the internet, with many internet users posting messages pleading with the thief to return the phone to Tian and his wife.

Tian said his daughter had been diagnosed with leukaemia when she was only four months old and had eventually died of a haemorrhage after her condition suddenly deteriorated.

Tongji Hospital of Tongji Medical College, in Hankou, where Tian’s daughter died, said it checked surveillance camera footage taken in the ward, but had found nothing suspicious.
