Mother later came forward to claim newborn boy after he was taken to hospital
A heavily pregnant woman wandered into a motor garage in eastern China and gave birth in less than 30 seconds before disappearing and leaving her newborn behind, according to an online report.
The news website of radio station Traffic FM918 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province reported that an employee found the baby boy on the garage floor at about 8am on Saturday.
“When I saw the boy, his lips were already purplish. He was not crying but I got worried after seeing blood on the ground. I knew it was a newborn … but I have never seen a baby this tiny before,” said the employee, Xiao Song.
He and other staff wrapped the baby in a blanket and called an ambulance.
When garage workers reviewed surveillance footage they say a woman in a yellow coat struggling to walk inside the garage.
She was then seen squatting among some car parts, while removing her pants.
In less than 30 seconds, she stood up and put her pants back on, before walking away as if nothing had happened.
She did, however, leave behind her handbag including identity cards and a wallet, Xiao Song said.
The hospital reported that the newborn was in sound medical condition apart from suffering from cold.
According to Hangzhou police cited in the story, the woman came forward to claim the boy and police were not treating the incidents as an abandoned case.
The woman told the police that she had no choice but to deliver the baby in a garage at the very last minute, but then did not know what to do so she left for a while. By the time she returned, the baby had gone, she said.
The report did now say how long the woman was absent from the scene.
