Footage of Chinese firefighters catching falling women goes viral online
A video of firefighters catching two women who fell from a burning building has gone viral on the Chinese mainland.
The incident occurred in Jiaxing in eastern China’s Zhejiang province on Saturday night, when an apartment on the top floor of a six-storey residential building caught fire, news portal Thepaper.cn reported.
Video footage, apparently taken with mobile phones, showed a woman dangling out of a window on the sixth storey before a firefighter at a window of the floor below grasped her legs .
Another firefighter in the room joined the first and the two pulled the woman into the room, the footage showed.
Moments later, as the fire spread to another room, another woman tried to climb out of the same window but, before firefighters could tie ropes to her legs, the woman fell out of the window and the two firefighters again caught her legs with their hands and pulled her into the lower floor, the report said.
The 29-year-old daughter of the family later told police that an electric blanket overheated and ignited when her father was sleeping on the couch and she and her mother were in different rooms. The father climbed out of window and was rescued soon after the firefighters arrived.
The mother, 51, had burns on her right arm and was taken to hospital, but the daughter and father were unhurt.
Nine fire engines with 43 firefighters were called to the scene at around 9pm after a house fire report, the report said.
“We just got her feet when she began to fall, and it was scary,” said Jiang Tiancai, one of the firefighters. “I wouldn’t be able to sleep in the future if I failed to catch her.”
