Chubby Chinese boy takes the floor with his Latin dance moves on US reality talent show
He Xiongfei’s mother made him learn dance to control his weight
A 10-year-old Chinese Latin dancer’s cheery confidence and charm have won him international fans after he performed on American reality series Little Big Shots on Sunday.
He Xiongfei, a Grade Four student from Luoyang in central China’s Henan province, can barely speak English, but he appeared well at ease as he conversed with American host Steve Harvey on stage through his interpreter.
He, nicknamed “Latin Dance Little Fatty” in Chinese, told Harvey before his performance that he never expected he would become so popular after learning to dance.
The boy first found fame on Chinese social media a year ago after a video of him performing a funny Latin dance was widely circulated online.
He was first enrolled in Latin dance classes in 2014 by his mother, who occasionally received flyers on the street advertising the school.
At the time, the boy was 1.4 metres tall but was overweight at 65kg.
“I learned to dance for the sake of losing weight,” he said. “I didn’t know that I would become so hot.”
He’s Latin dance moves, poise and the confidence he exuded on stage were greeted with loud applause by audience on the reality talent show.
A video of him on the show, posted on Little Big Shots’ YouTube channel last Friday, has already garnered more than 363,000 views and over 4,000 likes.
Several American and other international entertainment and news media outlets have also carried reports about the boy since his performance.
“I clapped and laughed so hard. This has definitely made my week,” one YouTube user wrote.
“This kid’s face is everything! So entertaining and talented!” another wrote.
