A schoolgirl in southern China jumped to death from a teaching building on Thursday after she was discovered cheating in her exams, mainland media reports.

The middle school pupil, identified only by her surname Long, was found cheating twice in mid-term exams before she leapt from the 5th floor of the school building in a county of Hunan province, news portal reported.

Long was rushed to hospital but died despite emergency rescue efforts, according to the report.

The student was scolded first by an invigilator and then later by her teacher after she was discovered cheating in the first test of the mid-term exam.

After 71 student suicides since 2013, education chief told Hong Kong schools are like a ‘prison’

In the second test she was reported cheating by classmates, according to the statement from the investigation carried out by the local Communist Party committee.

The statement said the student became disturbed before taking her own life but it was not known whether it was the shame of being caught cheating or some other matter that prompted her action.

Long performed well at school but her exam grades were poor, the statement added.

A classmate of Long told the news website that Long was seen crying after she was scolded by her teachers.
