A morbidly obese couple who went on a health kick to lose weight so that they could start a family have lost a combined 200kg – and they’re not finished yet, according to Chinese media reports.

Deng Yang and Lin Yue, not their real names, sought help from health professionals in Changchun, Jilin province, in late 2015 after doctors told them it would be dangerous for Lin to become pregnant at her size, state-run Chinanews.com reports.

The married couple, who are both in their early 30s, underwent treatments including acupuncture and a traditional Chinese heat therapy to help them lose weight.

They also exercised together, encouraging each other along the way, and changed their diets to eat less meat and more fruit and vegetables, the report said.

After almost two years of sticking to their weight-loss regime the couple have together lost a total of 200kg. They weighed a combined 400kg in 2015 – now they together weigh about 200kg and they intend to lose more.

Doctors say Lin can now conceive naturally, and the risk of her having a miscarriage or a child born with abnormalities was greatly reduced.

The couple met in 2010 at a gym in Beijing, where they had both been trying to lose weight to land a job, West China City Daily reported in 2015. They both weighed about 100kg at that time.

But after starting their relationship, they stopped exercising and watching their diets, instead indulging a love of heavy, meat-based meals. Both of them ballooned to about 200kg – Deng’s waist measured some 160cm, while Lin’s was 170cm, according to media reports.

Their obesity led to health problems, including high blood pressure and mobility issues.

Lin’s wedding dress had to be tailor-made because she could not fit into off-the-rack gowns.

She was overjoyed to be given the all-clear to start a family, the report said.
