Smuggler caught with 102 iPhones tucked into corset at Hong Kong border
A woman was arrested at a border checkpoint between Hong Kong and mainland China with 102 iPhones and 15 watches strapped around her midriff in a corset, according to a news website report.
The suspected smuggler was held at the Luohu checkpoint in Shenzhen which links to the Lo Wu immigration control in Hong Kong, Ifeng.com reported.
The woman, who was not named, drew the attention of customs officials because of her corpulent body shape and as she was wearing so many clothes on a hot day, according to the article.
She was asked to walk through a metal detector as officers suspected she was smuggling.
The iPhones and watches weighed about 20kg, according to the report.
Customs officials were quoted as saying it was their biggest seizure of smuggled goods concealed on the body.
The incident happened at about 8pm on June 30.
Shenzhen customs officers confiscated more than 400 iPhones last September in a crackdown on the smuggling of the handsets.
Travellers can take a new phone across the border into the mainland for personal use, but smugglers try to conceal iPhones to avoid paying customs tax.
