Chinese man who ate 54 ice lollies to quench his thirst told he has kidney malfunction

Dehydrated man gorged on frozen treats on hot day before finding out his problem might be more serious

A man in southeastern China who ate 54 ice lollies in a bid to quench his raging thirst ended up being diagnosed with a serious kidney problem, local media reported.

The 44-year-old, surnamed Zheng, was at his home in Quzhou, Zhejiang province on the evening of July 15 when he began to feel dehydrated. It had been a hot day, with the temperature reaching 37 degrees Celsius, so he was not overly concerned, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Saturday.

However, after eating one lolly after another, he found he just could not quench his thirst. Even after eating the 54 he had in his freezer, he still wasn’t sated and began drinking iced water before going to bed.

Unfortunately for Zheng, his problems did not end after a good night’s sleep, the report said.

At breakfast he complained of stomach pains and as soon as he tried to eat he began vomiting, it said.

Concerned about his health, Zheng visited his local community hospital where he was he was told he was suffering from gastroenteritis and put on a drip.

Three days later, however, he was referred to a higher level hospital where he was diagnosed with an acute kidney malfunction, the report said. It did not elaborate on the nature of the condition, but said it was under control.

Southeastern China has experienced record high temperatures in recent weeks, with the mercury rising beyond 40 degrees in some parts of Shanghai and Zhejiang. On Friday, Shanghai recorded its hottest day in 145 years when the temperature hit 40.8 degrees.
