Chinese woman left paralysed, in coma after botched beauty treatment

27-year-old suffered embolism after unqualified therapist injected fat cells into a blood vessel serving her brain

A Chinese woman is recovering in hospital after a botched beauty treatment left her in a coma and paralysed down her left side, state television reported.

The 27-year-old, who was not named, visited the Sumei clinic in Nanning, capital of southern China’s Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, to undergo a procedure to have fat injected into her right temple, China Central Television reported on Sunday.

The person conducting the treatment, however, was not qualified to do so, and after extracting fat from the woman’s thigh made a serious error while injecting it back into her right temple. Some of the fat cells entered a blood vessel serving the brain and caused an embolism, the report said.

The woman fell into a coma and was rushed to the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi University of Chinese Medicine, where she was found also to have suffered hemiplegia – paralysis – to her left side as a result of the increased pressure on her brain caused by the fat injection.

Since being admitted to the hospital, the woman has undergone four operations to remove the fat cells from the blood vessel. She is now in a stable condition, but remains paralysed on her left side and the embolism has yet to be completely removed, doctors were quoted as saying.

Following a joint investigation by police and health authorities, the manager of the clinic and the person who carried out the procedure were taken into custody.

The report did not name the people involved or provide a time frame for any of the incidents, but said the investigation was ongoing.
