A man in southeastern China who escaped after stealing watches and phones was caught by police at a boarding gate as his flight was delayed twice.

The man, whose name was not released, was detained at Hangzhou International Airport on Sunday for theft, thepaper.cn reports.

Police officers in Hangzhou received a report on Sunday morning from a resident that two mobile phones and a watch with a total value of 8,000 yuan (US$1,200) had been stolen from his home.

Officers identified the suspect just 20 minutes before his 6pm flight was due to depart for Haikou.
