Chinese thief’s escape plan foiled because flight was delayed for more than two hours
Man detained at airport boarding gate while trying to flee after burglary
A man in southeastern China who escaped after stealing watches and phones was caught by police at a boarding gate as his flight was delayed twice.
The man, whose name was not released, was detained at Hangzhou International Airport on Sunday for theft, thepaper.cn reports.
Police officers in Hangzhou received a report on Sunday morning from a resident that two mobile phones and a watch with a total value of 8,000 yuan (US$1,200) had been stolen from his home.
Officers identified the suspect just 20 minutes before his 6pm flight was due to depart for Haikou.
But because the flight was delayed – first for two hours, and then for a further 45 minutes – police had plenty of time to travel to the airport and arrest the man has he waited at the boarding gate.
The airport said the delays were due to the weather and air traffic control.
The man admitted to the police that he had been jailed for theft three years ago. It was not known how long he spent in jail.
He said after being released from prison, he started to steal again because he ran out of his money.
