That sinking feeling... how did this Chinese scooter rider fail to spot giant hole opening up in the road in front of him?

Cameras capture moment chasm formed in street, then moments later a man rode straight into the middle of it

A man riding a scooter fell into a sinkhole – reportedly because he was too busy looking at his mobile phone.

Half of the carriageway, an area big enough to accommodate a truck, collapsed early in the morning last Thursday in the downtown of Beihai city, Guangxi autonomous region.

Several seconds later the man fell into it, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

A video circulated online showing the giant sinkhole forming in the middle of the road. Just moments later, the scooter drove along and fell straight into the gaping chasm.

The scooter driver suffered slight injuries and climbed out of the sinkhole soon after, according to the report.

The reason for the road collapse remains under investigation.
