A starving toddler was rushed to hospital in western China on Tuesday after police found him home alone beside his dead father, Chinese media reported.

Officers made the grim discovery in Xiaogan township near Deyang on Tuesday afternoon after a resident in the flat below noticed water dripping from her kitchen ceiling, the Deyang Evening News reported on Wednesday.

The neighbour knocked on the door of the flat above and noticed a bad smell coming from the home.

The property manager notified the police, who found the two-year-old boy beside his father’s decaying corpse, the report said.

Neighbours said the child’s mother had left the home and the boy was in the sole care of his father, who was in his fifties.

Dr Zhang Xianzhu, from the Deyang No 5 People’s Hospital, said the boy could not speak or stand when he arrived at the medical facility but his condition had since improved and he could communicate.

“He told us that his mother left the house and he had no grandparents,” Zhang said.

Residents have donated clothes, money and toys for the child.

Police have launched an investigation into the father’s death, but are not treating the case as suspicious.
