Man apologises for throwing carrots at bears in Beijing wildlife park

Photos of Sunday’s incident went viral online

A man has apologised after photographs of him throwing objects at bears in a Beijing zoo on Sunday went viral online, mainland media reported on Tuesday.

The man had thrown carrots at the bears, Beijing Wildlife Park said on Monday.

The 16-year-old park in southern Beijing has drive-through areas featuring large predators such as lions, tigers and bears, with moats separating the animals from cars.

Visitors are allowed to roll down their car windows while driving through the area, but are prohibited from leaving their vehicles or feeding the animals. Warnings at the entrance tell visitors to stay in their cars, Beijing Youth Daily reported.

The man, only identified by his surname Wu, contacted the newspaper after he saw the photos online and apologised for breaking the rules.

He said he had bought the carrots at the park and had not meant to hurt the bears.

Wu said he had seen other visitors getting out of their cars in the tiger area and thought doing so and feeding the animals was permitted.

Wu’s wife said the person who posted the photos online had deleted them after her husband apologised for his actions.
