Abuse scandals that have tarnished name of Chinese kindergartens
The allegations centred on a kindergarten in Beijing this week are the latest in a series of cases of alleged abuse at nursery schools in China.
Allegations against staff at the RYB Education New World kindergarten in the Chaoyang district of the capital include piercing children with needles and sexual molestation, state media reported. Some teachers at the nursery school have been suspended as the police investigate, the state-run news agency Xinhua said.
Here are details of other abuse cases at Chinese kindergartens to hit the headlines in recent years, which have sparked a debate over whether there is sufficient oversight by the authorities of nursery schools:
Security camera footage at a nursery centre for staff of the travel agency Ctrip showed staff members pushing children and force feeding pupils mustard and sterilisers. Four people in charge of the nursery school have been detained by police.
The kindergarten was shut down earlier this month.
Wuhan, Hubei province:
Surveillance footage showed teachers at the Vanke City kindergarten smacking, kicking and pushing children, pulling their ears and waving sticks at them, according to media reports earlier this month. Teachers apologised for their behaviour.
Yiyang, Hunan province:
Camera footage showed two cleaners at the Longshan kindergarten using adhesive tape to seal two four-year-old’s mouths for 17 minutes because they were “noisy”. The cleaners were sacked.
Tongxiang, Zhejiang province:
A teacher used a syringe filled with blue paint to threaten nine children at a nursery school who refused to take their afternoon naps. When the deterrent did not work, the teacher jabbed the needle into the buttocks of several of the children. The teacher was placed in detention for 10 days in May.
Baofeng county, Henan province:
A 31-year-old teacher at a Xinxin kindergarten was arrested in April for using syringes to stab more than 20 children aged three in their palms, hands, backside, legs and arms for “misbehaving”. The teacher was charged with maltreatment as a guardian.
Foshan, Guangdong province:
A five-year-old girl was molested more than 40 times at a child care centre for migrant workers by a social worker between 2014 and 2015. The social worker was jailed for three years.
Lingwu, Ningxia region:
A 54-year-old teacher, Huang Zhenxin, sexually assaulted 12 out of 13 girls attending his village kindergarten from 2013 to 2014. The children were aged four to six. Huang was sentenced to life in prison the following year.
Pingdingshan, Henan province:
The husband of a kindergarten owner was convicted of assaulting a two-year-old girl in 2015. He was given a six-year jail term.
