Film-makers aim to create a big bang at festival for shorts

The Hong Kong Independent Short Film and Video Awards were given a name change in February to Incubator for Film and Visual Media in Asia (Ifva), better expressing the goal of cultivating creativity and nurturing media talent.

The 18th festival, next March, will take the theme "Creativity Big Bang". Organisers are now calling for online submissions in five categories - youth, open, animation, interactive media and Asian "new force". The deadline is 6pm on October 22.

Zcratch Creation, comprising Ifva animation category awardees Benny Chan, Ho Ka-ho, Tsui Ka-hei and Tsui Ka-long, has designed the key visuals and promotional trailer this year. The trailer, featuring Hong Kong's iconic pineapple bun and a camera-toting housefly, aims to show an artist's potential.

The jury consists of creative types such as film director Felix Chong Man-keung, Professor Jeffrey Shaw, dean of the school of creative media at City University, illustrator Siuhak and musician Adrian Chow.

Those who wouldn't mind the chance to win the HK$100,000 cash prize can send in submissions now.

Winners will also earn the chance to attend cultural exchange programmes and overseas film festivals, such as the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in France.
