Model officers aim to cut road toll

The police force on Wednesday launched a trial scheme to use life-sized images of police officers on the city’s highways to deter speeding and dangerous driving.

Two versions of the models of police officers will be deployed on three highways in the New Territories from Thursday during the trial. One is a police traffic officer holding a speed camera and another is an officer wearing sunglasses and holding a clipboard.

The 9kg models are made of metal and are “dressed” in the correct uniforms.

The two models will be placed at different spots along Tolo Harbour Highway, Tuen Mun Highway and Fanling Highway between 9am and 6pm every day.

Chief inspector Tsang Kin-keung, from Traffic New Territories North Headquarters, said the aim of placing the models was to alert drivers to the dangers of speeding. It was hoped that when drivers saw the “officers” they would remember to drive more safely.

Tsang said that accidents in the district were increasing. From January to July, the district had already seen 2,264 road accidents – more than half of the 3,688 cases for the whole of last year. Casualties were involved in 2,229 of this year’s cases.
