Beauty brand Sjal taps soothing essence of sapphires in a facial oil

It's not unusual to have sapphires in your jewellery box, but how about in your cosmetics cabinet?

Kristin Petrovich, the founder of cult beauty brand Sjal, says she believes sapphires can give beauty products a magical boost.

Petrovich flew in from New York on Tuesday to launch Sjal's Saphir facial oil at Causeway Bay's 10/10 Space salon.

She says sapphires are submerged in the product's base oil for at least three months before being mixed with essential oils so that the gems' energy can be transferred to the product.

"Every substance in the universe has a different energy, and sapphire's is very soothing and calming," Petrovich said.

In keeping with her New Age philosophy, a tarot card reader and crystal jewellery designer entertained guests at the event.

Since its launch in 2001, Sjal has attracted a strong base of celebrity fans.

Petrovich says a well-balanced lifestyle is also crucial to having perfect skin.

"What goes on inside [your body] reflects on the outside as well," she said. "I don't go extreme on my diet, but I go for organic greens as much as I can, and eat more fish than [other] meat. I also get acupuncture and massage treatments."
