The Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong would not contest the chairmanship of the Legislative Council's house committee, party chief Tam Yiu-chung said. Leaders of four Beijing loyalist political groups and two pro-establishment lawmakers met for the first time to discuss their collaboration in the new four-year Legco term to start on October 1. After the meeting, Tam said it would be inappropriate for the DAB to vie for the post, as party member Jasper Tsang Yok-sing hoped to be re-elected as Legco president.
The Centre for Health Protection said visitors to Macau should be aware of recent cases of dengue fever. A centre spokesman said Macau health officials notified Hong Kong of two cases that were believed to have been contracted locally as the infected people had not travelled.
Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok denied accusations that the appointments of security bureau officials favoured the disciplined services. He said the naming of Lee Ka-chiu as undersecretary of security, and other appointments, adhered to principles that would ensure efficient policymaking and a good mix of administrative and disciplined services staff.
A Filipino captain of a Hong Kong freighter was missing yesterday after the ship listed off the coast of northern Taiwan, Taiwanese officials said. Reports said another 16 people on board - three Chinese, three Filipinos and 10 Indonesians - were rescued by a helicopter and coastguard vessel. Huge waves caused the ship, the New Lucky, to list and it was now adrift, Taiwanese news reports said.
Chemicals that could have produced 1kg of methamphetamine, or Ice, were found in an industrial building in Tuen Mun. The chemicals and laboratory equipment were seized after a fire was reported at the site in Kin Tai Street.
Prison officers found 310 grams of suspected dangerous drugs wrapped in plastic inside a woman inmate, the Correctional Services Department said. The woman, 29, was sent to hospital.

There was no winner of the first prize in last night's draw. The numbers drawn were 6, 7, 18, 21, 27 and 48 and the extra number 42. One-and-a-half tickets won the HK$1,054,440 second prize. Third prize paid HK$76,680.
