Regina Ip, Jeffrey Lam appointed to Exco
New People’s Party chairwoman Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee and a pro-business legislator on Wednesday were appointed members of the Executive Council - the government’s top advisory body.
The appointment of Ip and Jeffrey Lam Kin-fung as non-official Exco members takes immediate effect, a government spokesman said.
Exco members are appointed by Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. They advise him on policy making.
Ip, 62, was re-elected in Hong Kong Island constituency in the September 9 Legislative Council election.
The former security secretary resigned from the government for pushing plans to enact the Basic Law Article 23, or the anti-subversion law, in 2003. The controversial proposal triggered a 500,000-strong street protest.
Lam, 60, represents the commercial constituency and is also the vice chairman of the Business and Professionals Alliance for Hong Kong, a new pro-business alliance.
With the two new members, the Exco comprises 31 members, including 15 principal officials appointed under the accountability system and 16 non-official members.
Leung said: “Mr Jeffrey Lam and Mrs Regina Ip have rich experience in the Legislative Council and public service, and are committed to fostering the development of Hong Kong. I am pleased to have them joining the Executive Council.”
