Man arrested after dogs thrown to their deaths from window

An emotionally unstable epileptic man has been arrested for cruelty to animals after two dogs were thrown from a fifth-floor window and died.

A beagle and a mongrel were found dead on the road outside the Sha Tin block of flats where the 33-year-old man lives.

The man had been screaming and hurling things around his home in Great Hill Block, Tung Lo Wan Hill Road, at about 8am when he threw the dogs out, his 59-year-old mother told police.

"He was still in an emotional, unstable state when police entered his home," a police officer said. Officers arrested the man, an epilepsy patient, and sent him to Prince of Wales Hospital. He was later transferred to Tai Po Hospital for examination.

He was released on bail and is required to report back to police next month.

Police are treating the case as animal cruelty, an offence that carries a maximum penalty of three years' jail and a HK$200,000 fine.

In another case, a 10-month-old mongrel is suspected to have been poisoned in Ta Kwu Ling in the northern New Territories.

The dog was found dead outside its owner's house in Wo Keng Shan Tsuen at about 12.30pm on Wednesday. No one has so far been arrested.
