"My struggles as a transsexual in Hong Kong" Video by Hedy Bok
Mimi Wong, 58, is a transsexual who has been lobbying for a sexual minorities law that would include transgender people. Born male, Wong was once married to a woman and has a son; now she is unemployed, after working in IT for a major bank in Hong Kong for 30 years.
“People talk about LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender], but people often forget about the T,” said Wong, pointing out that being a transgender individual is not a form of sexual orientation, but a form of gender identity. Therefore, she said, it is important for lawmakers to address the differences that transgender individuals require compared with other sexual minority groups, but right now they are being neglected by society.
In the video, Wong confesses that undergoing the sex-change operation was a stressful process, and she even lost her family because of her decision to become a woman.
"The last time I talked to my son was four or five years ago."
