Discovery Bay kids walk to raise funds for the needy
Discovery Bay children walk four kilometres to raise money for those less well off than themselves, in the 7th year of an annual event
Big and little, and all wearing red, a cheerful group of marchers easily covered their four-kilometre course in Discovery Bay, getting good exercise while raising funds for the needy.
Dressed in red T-shirts, hundreds of students, parents and staff from Lantau Island's Discovery Mind International Play Centre and Kindergarten completed the sponsored charity walk on November 17.
It is the seventh year the centre has staged the walk to raise funds for Operation Santa Claus, the annual charity campaign which this year is raising money for organisations that help sick children, the elderly and people with disabilities.
Doris Ng, the principal of Discovery Mind, said: "It has become our big day each year. The funds raised can really help people and we hope to keep it up."
This year was an even bigger success than usual, with more families joining, and more than 600 individuals participating.
The course, which extended from the kindergarten to a park, was a light-hearted affair, as children played with their friends.
When they reached the park, the children were rewarded with a clown performance.
There was also a mini carnival with face painting, cup cakes and a charity book sale.
The event has become a tradition for some, like the Tahirali family: mum, dad and their three little girls all dressed up in Santa Claus costumes.
Operation Santa Claus is jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK. It is raising funds for projects run by 18 charitable organisations.
