Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital staff hold karaoke party for Operation Santa Claus
Party is the perfect medicine for hospital staff as they join fun at a karaoke and dance event to raise cash for appeal and forget work stresses
A hospital lecture theatre doesn't sound like the most exciting of party venues, but a charity karaoke and dance night at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital proved otherwise.
Doctors and nurses sang and danced to pop tracks at the event last month, enjoying themselves while raising money for Operation Santa Claus (OSC).
"Lights off and we can throw a party! Let's grab a drink or two," announced medical superintendent Dr Walton Li Wai-tat to kick off the fundraiser.
"Through this party that raises funds for OSC, we hope to boost the festive atmosphere. We have received many patients this year and everyone has worked hard," he said. Donors sponsored each song and Li - with a HK$10,000 pledge from the ophthalmology department and another, also ofHK$10,000, from his wife - performed one of the late Canto-pop icon Danny Chan Pak-keung's classics as several nurses danced.
Deputy superintendent Dr Joseph Chan Woon-tong asked everyone to donate HK$20 before he would sing. The party ran from afternoon until night so staff working shifts could join the fun.
"It's great to see staff from different departments supporting the event, from the cleaning staff to doctors and nurses. The party is not only for charity but also for everyone to have fun and release stress," said Chan.
The hospital has been supporting OSC, a project jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and RTHK, which helps 18 beneficiaries this year.
In addition, the private Happy Valley hospital will host a charity lunch today, featuring games, performances and more karaoke.
Sponsors and staff from 20 hospital departments and wards will also take part in a cooking competition. All the money raised will go to the appeal.
