China CITIC funds academy to help needy children learn
China CITIC Bank International commits HK$7m to provide disadvantaged pupils with free tutoring, mentoring and visits
China CITIC Bank International is looking especially angelic this year, ramping up its charitable giving as one of Operation Santa Claus' major donors and sponsors of the CNCBI Knowledge Angel Academy.
"This deeper and more comprehensive programme represents a tremendous progress from the previous initiative that provided about 200 pupils from deprived families with free tutorial classes every year," said Zoe Lau, head of the bank's CEO office.
Almost HK$3 million has been spent over the past four years to provide free tutoring for more than 700 pupils from needy families, in an earlier incarnation of the academy, Lau said.
"We really hope the CNCBI Knowledge Angel Academy will help deprived families by reducing conflicts between parents and children and relieving the pressure faced by parents when they guide their kids' learning," she said.
China CITIC Bank International, or CNCBI, became a major OSC donor last year, joining an effort - jointly organised by the and RTHK - that has raised more than HK$170 million for 158 charities for the needy in Hong Kong and on the mainland.
"We are proud to become a major donor of the Operation Santa Claus since last year because it is a respected fundraising effort and its beneficiaries are well aligned with China CITIC Bank International's corporate social responsibility themes," Lau said.
This year, the funds raised will go towards helping a wide spectrum of underprivileged people in Hong Kong, including children, the elderly, victims of domestic violence and people with mental and physical disabilities.
