Executive Councillor Chow Chung-kong has been made the chairman of the advisory committee on corruption at the Independent Commission Against Corruption. His term will start on New Year's Day and last for two years.
Police are hunting for three robbers who knocked a man unconscious and stole his suitcase containing US$300,000 worth of jewellery in Yau Ma Tei yesterday. The victim, 54, was attacked shortly after he left his jewellery shop in Temple Street at about 11am. A passer-by found him unconscious in an alley and called police.
A 53-year-old man died after his flat burst into flames in Sau Mau Ping yesterday. The blaze broke out on the second floor of Sau Yee House at Sau Mau Ping Estate at 12.48pm and was put out by 1.15pm. The victim was found trapped under a wardrobe. A chain was tied around his waist, with one end attached to the wardrobe. Police said it was possible he set fire to his flat to commit suicide.
After carcinogens were found in cooking oil this month, the president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, Simon Wong Ka-wo, urged the government to look into regulating companies that recycle waste cooking oil. Normally, waste oil is recycled to make biodiesel, but Wong is worried some of it may have been extracted to make substandard cooking oil.
Kowloon Motor Bus has spent about HK$1 billion buying 370 "new-generation" E500 model Euro V buses from British firm Alexander Dennis. The double-decker buses use less fuel and emit less pollution than earlier models and will be in service from March, linking the city centre with the New Territories.
