Cover with rare stamp sells for HK$4.8 million

A cover, posted in Shanghai in 1923, bearing a rare $2 stamp depicting the Peking Hall of Classics that was inverted by mistake, sold for HK$4.8 million at an auction by Spink China in Wan Chai yesterday. It was one of only 50 of the stamps issued with the error. It was expected to sell for up to HK$6 million.

A 21-year-old woman was arrested for suspected animal cruelty after five cats, one of them dead, were found cooped up in three metal cages near her home in San Sang Tsuen, near Tin Shui Wai. SPCA vets are treating the cats. Meanwhile, hundreds of people marched from Central to the government headquarters, demanding action and harsher penalties for animal cruelty cases.

 

More than 10 groups marched from Wan Chai to the Admiralty government headquarters, urging Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying to address long-term poverty relief in his policy speech on Wednesday.

 

Don't expect details of standard working hours in the chief executive's policy address this week, says Secretary for Labour and Welfare Matthew Cheung Kin-chung. He said the details would be left to a committee, to be set up by March.

 

Passenger and flight numbers at the airport soared to a record high last year, with more than 56 million passengers using the airport - up 5 per cent.

 

The non-profit Hong Kong Environmental Protection Association said it received 50 tonnes of Christmas trees - many more than the expected 10 tonnes - for recycling. They will be ground into organic fertiliser.

There were no winners of last night's first prize. The winning numbers were 3, 6, 19, 21, 31, 49. The extra number was 7. The second prize paid HK$1,181,070 and was won by 1.5 tickets. The third prize paid HK$94,480.
