The bomb, believed to be an artillery shell left behind from the second world war, was found in an area of dense vegetation by an expatriate hiker shortly after noon.
A large part of it was buried in soil.
An initial examination by police bomb disposal experts suggested the bomb did not pose any immediate danger.
Checks were underway to evaluate the bomb’s condition and its surroundings to determine when it would be possible to detonate it.
About 20 occupants of a nearby youth hostel were evacuated as a precaution, police said.
Located at the western edge of Hong Kong Island, Mount Davis overlooks some of the territory’s most vital waterways.
A favourite destination for hikers, the hill has gun batteries, bunkers and emplacements that date back to the early 20th century. During the second world war, the fortifications were heavily damaged by continuous aerial attacks by the Japanese.
