Authorities warn parents of Kwun Tong doctor's expired vaccine
Health authorities have issued an alert to parents of children who received flu injections from a Kwun Tong private doctor after he was found to have administered expired vaccines.
Secretary for Food and Health Dr Ko Wing-man last night urged parents of children aged between six months and six years who had received an influenza vaccine from Dr Chung Fan-sheng between May 1 last year and January 25 this year to arrange for the children to get another vaccination.
He said the main concern was that the effectiveness of the expired vaccine might be lower than expected.
The doctor has been removed from the Department of Health's vaccination subsidy schemes for children and the elderly.
The case will be referred to the Medical Council, a department spokesman said, adding that it was the first such case detected.
The case emerged when a parent told the department on Saturday that Chung - who practised at unit 12B, on the ground floor of Tsui Ying House, Tsui Ping Estate, Kwun Tong - had given expired seasonal influenza vaccines to his son, triggering an immediate investigation.
The doctor told investigators he had mistakenly administered the expired vaccine Vaxigrip 0.25ml for paediatric use to a two-year-old boy on January 22, and again to two other boys aged two and three, on January 24. The expiry date was last April.
The three children have not suffered any ill effects and did not require any medical treatment since the vaccination.
