Two teenage girls from Hong Kong allegedly detained in Buenos Aires, Argentina, by men demanding compensation for a valuable vase they had broken are safe and expected to go home soon, Secretary for Security Lai Tung-kwok said yesterday. They went to the Chinese embassy on Saturday and were given accommodation and help to go home. The girls, 17 and 18, are helping local police. Lai said it was up to local authorities to find out more about the male friend they said was travelling with them. Three senior officers from Hong Kong went to Buenos Aires on Saturday to assist in the probe.
ICAC commissioner Simon Peh Yun-lu said he would study an announcement by listed firm Pearl Oriental Oil to see whether it had legal problems. Released on Friday, the statement said its vice-chairman Lew Mon-hung was arrested by the Independent Commission Against Corruption last Wednesday for criminal intimidation and perverting the course of justice. It was over a letter Lew purportedly wrote to Leung Chun-ying, asking him to intervene in the ICAC probe into Pearl Oriental Oil, or he would set off "political bombs". Peh declined to comment.
