A man was arrested at the Lok Ma Chau border on Monday and accused of attempting to smuggle HK$24,940 worth of milk powder into the Chinese mainland, according to the government.

The Customs and Excise Department detained the 23-year-old driver after 60 cans of formula were found hidden behind the back seat of his seven-seater van.

In a separate case, customs officials detained two people on Saturday after 38 cans of undeclared milk powder were found in the trunk of their car at Shenzhen Bay.

Under new regulations that go into effect on Friday, travellers leaving Hong Kong will be allowed to carry only 1.8kg, or approximately two cans, of milk formula.

Anyone caught breaching the rules may face two years of jail time and a HK$500,000 fine.
