Grandmother 'rescues' girl from bus

Police have warned parents to stay alert after a woman apparently tried to abduct a four-year-old girl from outside a Kowloon City school.

The girl's grandmother told police that the girl had been picked up and carried onto a bus at about 4.40pm on Monday.

The grandmother had been waiting at a bus stop outside Pui Ching Primary School on Waterloo Road with the girl and a six-year-old boy. The girl was a pupil at the school's kindergarten.

She said she saw the No 10 bus approaching and bent down to pick up her bags in readiness to board the bus. She then realised her granddaughter was gone and saw her on the No 271 bus, which had already arrived at the stop.

She shouted to the driver to stop and managed to board the bus and retrieve her granddaughter before the doors shut. The girl was unhurt.

The grandmother told police she had seen a woman who looked suspicious close to the girl on the bus.

The incident was also mentioned on the Facebook page of a "Yann Chow", who claimed to be the girl's father. In a post on Monday, he said his daughter had been taken aboard a bus by a stranger in a failed abduction bid.

I'd heard rumours about child abductions, but I didn't think about it too much. I never expected something like this would happen to my daughter today

He said it was "too dreadful to imagine" what could have happened had the grandmother not seen her on the bus. "I'd heard rumours about child abductions, but I didn't think about it too much. I never expected something like this would happen to my daughter today," he wrote.

A police spokesman said yesterday they were "very concerned about the case", which was being handled by the Kowloon City division. Patrols in the area had been stepped up.

No arrest has been made.

Officers contacted the primary school to remind staff they should report any suspicious activities. Witnesses to the incident can call police on 2760 5512.
