A coach of Hong Kong's national Wushu team has been arrested in connection with the indecent assault of two female students as young as 12, it was revealed yesterday.
The man, 46, was arrested on January 31 in Sha Tin after two of his students, aged 12 and 16, told police that they were allegedly molested last year.
They alleged that the coach had touched their waist, thigh and back.
The girls were accompanied by their parents when they made their statements.
Police officers have interviewed about 50 other teammates, male and female, but so far no other students have reported inappropriate behaviour.
"It could be a misunderstanding, or it really could be indecent assault," an officer said.
"We would invite some Wushu teachers to talk about their normal practice [in teaching students]," the officer said.
Checklin Sin Kwok-lam, vice-president of Hong Kong Wushu Union, said the coach was experienced and no such complaints had been made against him before. He said CCTV footage had not revealed anything suspicious.
A spokesman for the Hong Kong Sports Institute, which hired the coach, only said the coach was on leave and that training was being carried out by other coaches. She refused to comment further.
The coach joined the Hong Kong team last year on a two-year contract. The website of the Faculty of Wushu of Chengdu Sport University, said the coach he had been a member of the Sichuan Wushu team and had international coaching experience.
He was granted bail and will report to police later this month.
