Wife dies in stabbing at busy restaurant

Woman received multiple wounds in attack at eatery during dinner hour

A man was arrested after he allegedly stabbed his wife to death in a Chai Wan restaurant during the busy dinner hour last night.

Police said the unemployed man, 57, approached the woman, 49, at Tao Heung Pier 88 in Paradise Mall at Heng Fa Chuen where she worked at about 7pm.

Police chief inspector Lam Siu-wah said the couple had a heated argument near the restaurant's toilets and the man attacked the woman with a knife he had brought with him.

After the attack, the suspect stayed at the scene where he was arrested.

The woman received multiple wounds and was taken unconscious to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital where she was confirmed dead at 7.25pm.

Officers recovered a 30cm ceramic knife at the scene.

The women's colleagues at the restaurant where she had worked for about six years said the woman had a troubled relationship with the man, who was also not happy about her gambling habit.

He also suspected that she was having an affair, the colleagues said.

The couple, who were married in 1995, have a teenage son and daughter.

They live with the son in a flat in Eastern Street, Sheung Wan.

The Eastern district crime squad was investigating.

Post mortem examinations will be conducted to confirm the cause of her death.

An officer at the scene said the family had a history of domestic violence.

On March 17, a woman killed her tycoon husband before jumping to her death from a block of luxury apartments.

Businesswoman Wong Suk-kan, 47, was believed to have slashed her long-time lover, "King of Fruits" Peng Chi-hui more than 100 times before jumping off the 77th floor of the Harbourside apartments in Kowloon West.

Peng was a director of Ho Fai Holding (Hong Kong), a company providing logistical services between the city and the mainland.
