Six injured in Tsim Sha Tsui gang violence

Five men were arrested, aged 25 to 43, after a brawl broke out involving at least two dozen people in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Minden Avenue.

Police are looking for 30 people suspected of taking part in a series of tit-for-tat gang violence in Tsim Sha Tsui that left at least six men injured on Sunday morning.

Five men were arrested, aged 25 to 43, after a brawl broke out involving at least two dozen people in Tsim Sha Tsui’s Minden Avenue, sometimes billed as “Kowloon’s Lan Kwai Fong”.

Police officers arrived to stop the fighting with riot gear and police dogs, local media reported on Sunday. The five men arrested were charged with assault, extortion and criminal damages.

According to police, the two rival factions were involved in an earlier dispute over the handling of a “protection fee”. When a group of the men came back to confront the other party, they were attacked by 30 men armed with glass bottles, knives and baseball bats.

A police van took four of the injured men, aged 33 to 43, to hospital. While they were in hospital, two other men were wounded in the area by what police said was a retaliatory attack. They were taken to hospital by ambulance.

The six detainees and five injured men were of South Asian descent, police said.

The Yau Tsim District Anti-Triad Squad are investigating.

There were 2,340 reports of triad-related crimes last year, a 6 per cent rise from 2011, according to police figures.
