Thousands vote 'no' on Hong Kong's proposed Sichuan quake donation

A great majority of online readers of the South China Morning Post seemed to have made up their minds about Leung Chun-ying's proposed HK$100 million donation.

As Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying sought to defend his proposal to donate HK$100 million from government coffers to earthquake relief in Sichuan province after Saturday’s massive tremor, a great majority of online readers of the South China Morning Post seemed to have made up their minds about the plan.

The SCMP.com poll asking readers whether Legco should approve the proposed HK$100 million donation has gone viral since early Tuesday morning. By 2.30pm, it had attracted almost 5,000 votes, with 92 per cent of the respondents voting "no".  This is among the highest numbers of votes a poll on SCMP.com has ever received.

In the SCMP.com poll, 7 per cent of the readers picked the option of "yes, but with conditions to prevent misuse".  Only about 1 per cent of respondents chose an unconditional "yes".
