The latest crackdown on illegal activities involving parallel-goods trading netted 14 mainlanders in Sheung Shui, the town neighbouring Shenzhen.
Those arrested were found trying to transport baby milk powder, among other goods.
More than 800 people have been rounded up since law enforcers started stepping up border checks almost a year ago to curb cross-border trading in infant formula that had led to a shortage for local babies.
Yesterday, immigration and police officers arrested nine men and five women, aged between 18 and 54. Besides formula, they were also trying to transport red wine, cosmetics, daily necessities and food, the Immigration Department said. The 14 were held on suspicion of breaching the conditions of their stay.
Since September, officers have conducted a number of raids, arresting 889 mainlanders and 10 Hongkongers for suspected involvement in parallel-goods trading. The action was taken in response to growing discontent about product prices being pushed up by traders who buy goods in bulk to profit from demand on the mainland.
So far, 107 mainlanders have been prosecuted for breaching their conditions of stay. The other 782 were sent back to the mainland. Among those prosecuted, 99 were jailed for four weeks to two months. The rest had their charges withdrawn.
