A construction worker who rustled up a crowd in a bid to intimidate police who were investigating possible triad activity has been jailed for five weeks.

The magistrate also issued a call for the public to respect the police as he sentenced Gary Cheung Man-yui, who had a previous conviction for claiming to be a triad member.

"Everybody ought to show respect for law enforcement officers," Deputy Magistrate Tsoi Shun-cheong said in Tuen Mun Court yesterday.

"The police force has contributed a great effort to upholding law and order. No one is allowed to provoke or obstruct officers during the legitimate execution of their duties.

"If even the legitimate execution of duties is subject to obstruction, social harmony and civilians' lives and properties would be at stake."

Tsoi's plea comes amid a growing split in public opinion over police practices.

Cheung, 28, pleaded not guilty to one count of resisting a police officer.
