MALE, Maldives — The first democratically elected president of the Maldives, who was ousted last year in what he called a coup, faces a presidential election runoff against the brother of the country's former dictator. Mohamed Nasheed, who received 45 percent in the first round, could still see a challenge in securing a simple majority if his three election opponents form an alliance against him. The second round of voting pits Nasheed against Yaamin Abdul Qayyoom, a brother of Maldives' former autocrat Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

MADRID — Anti-monarchy protesters to hold a demonstration downtown Madrid to demand abolition of the monarchy. Demonstration to start at 1600 GMT.

BELGRADE, Serbia — A gay pride march to be held in Serbia, amid fears that the gathering could erupt in violence as it did in 2010, when more than 100 police and right-wing extremists were injured. The march is seen as a test of government commitment to protect human rights as it seeks EU integration.
