Activists from the environmental group Greenpeace staged a silent protest outside the Russian consulate in Hong Kong on Friday.

The activists were protesting against the arrests by the Russian Coast Guard of 30 of their colleagues who were on board the Greenpeace ship ‘Arctic Sunrise’ that was protesting against Russian Arctic drilling at a Gazprom oil rig in the Russian Arctic sea.

Besides Hong Kong, activists have staged a number of protests at Russian embassies around the world in support of the Greenpeace activists and crew of the ‘Arctic Sunrise’.

The Gazprom oil rig will be the first oil rig to successfully produce oil in the Arctic.

Greenpeace says this will put the pristine polar environment at peril from disasters such as uncontrollable oil slicks similar to the stricken BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.
