HK-Shenzhen to sign new co-operation agreements
The governments of Hong Kong and Shenzhen are expected to sign pacts on education, tourism and technological co-operation today, as senior officials meet in Hong Kong.
One of the new policies is said to deal with providing classes in Shenzhen schools for Hongkongers, which is expected to benefit Hong Kong-born mainland children.
There will also be an agreement between the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks and the Qianhai Authority – Shenzhen's service industry co-operation zone.
Chief Secretary Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, in her opening speech during the meeting at the government headquarters in Admiralty, said much work had been done over the past year, including cracking down on smuggling and making it easier for Shenzhen students attending Hong Kong schools to make the border crossing.
“Good progress was also made on encouraging co-operation between the financial and professional sectors,” Lam said.
Shenzhen mayor Xu Qin said he expected further inroads to be made as the two cities continued to work together.
The officials are expected to sign the agreements around noon.
The new policies will add to a raft of pacts between the cities, which hold regular co-operation meetings. They deal with issues such as cross-border immigration, ports and customs security, infrastructure, down to the smuggling of milk powder.
