Hongkongers still ‘negative’ about mainland visitors, HKU poll shows

HKU poll shows that nearly a third of Hongkongers have 'negative feelings' for mainlanders

PUBLISHED : Wednesday, 04 December, 2013, 5:57pm
UPDATED : Thursday, 05 December, 2013, 10:59pm

Negative feelings in Hong Kong towards mainland Chinese are at their highest for some years, while sentiment about Japanese people remains comparatively warm, a poll shows.

The Hong Kong University survey conducted in November showed 31.8 per cent of Hong Kong people have “negative” feelings for people from mainland China.

The same survey in May put the figure at 35.6 per cent, meaning the average figure for this year was the highest since the exercise began in 2007.

Mainland tourists or residents are an important source of revenue for Hong Kong. But they are also seen as straining the city’s resources and pushing up prices of items ranging from baby formula to property.

More than 1,000 people were interviewed by phone for the survey.

Only 14.9 per cent of those questioned in Hong Kong, which was under harsh Japanese occupation during the second world war, harboured negative feelings toward Japanese people in the second half of the year.

However negative feelings towards the Japanese government reached a high point this year - more than 63 per cent in the second half of the year, and 58.8 per cent in the first half.

A dispute between China and Japan over East China Sea islands has intensified in the past year, fuelling hostility towards the Tokyo government on the mainland and in other Chinese societies.

What I don't understand is the "forgiveness" and "amnesty" offered by some HKers to the Japanese who brutally murdered millions of their kinsmen, some of which may even be their distant relatives. It is true that all those events happened 70 years ago, but history is not to be forgotten especially when the criminals themselves have never expressed any regret at all. They worshipped war criminals as deities.
Imagine if you were a Jew, would you forgive someone who denies the holocaust and worship Hitler as a god? Only those who are remorseful towards their course of action are worthy of forgiveness.
cheechee129
It is true that the strong demand and purchasing power from the mainland people help push up the price level of items ranging from baby forumla to property in Hong Kong. But we should not forget we did welcom their visits in 2003 when Hong Kong sufferred from SARS and financial difficulty. When we always uphold the principle of fair and equality, have we tried to show our sympathy to treat our compatriot fairly? We are just lucky enough to be born in Hong Kong, a modern city, so we can receive better education.

SCMP should stop reporting on this as HK'er vs. Mainlanders. I despise the overcrowding caused by so many visitors, mostly from one place, clogging up the limited infrastructure in HK. But, that is Beijing policy done on purpose to destroy HK, not the visitors' fault. Poor manners, yes, but I almost punched a Flip maid on a train who argued it is OK to feed a little girl in her care, because she was hungry. I've also helped a Mainland mother with her baby crib, to descend a flight of stairs at an MTR station. Treat people as people, not as labels. I have made many close friends when I lived in China. I find loud talking people, HK and Mainland, on trains obnoxious. I have knocked over people forcing their way in the middle lane when I try to exit a subway. Stop causing strife with your idiotic reporting. Report it as those who are civilized (like me) vs. the uncivilized (like loud people and that Flip maid). Another thing, watch out on Sundays as Flips buying cheap goods at Park n Shop don't bag and leave with their fruits at the check out line. They purposely let their cheap foods co-mingle with my bottle of wine and expensive stuff, then pretend to accidentally bag my wine and goods along with their apples and a banana. That was not a HK vs. Mainland thing. That was just low life behavior endemic to a society. I told the Flips, "Next time you wonder why people don't want you here long term, remember today." Not even a "Sorry".

Hongkongers are snobbish. Who knew?

This is a ridiculous survey. What was the objective of such survey other than to heighten public hostility over mainland Chinese tourists? Media should play a role in alleviating social tension and contributing for the better of Hong Kong.
I have come back to Hong Kong for about 2.5 years and can see vast improvement in them and have also witnessed appalling behaviors from the locals. I think it is time for HongKongers to hold up a mirror to look at themselves. I am constantly bugged by the poking umbrellas during wet days, not giving up seats for elderly and those that are pregnant and using their phone all the time and being oblivious about the people around them, protesting and complaining just about everything.
Do a survey about these and publicize it to help Hong Kong withhold its value SCMP!

This article is quite funny. SCMP should just change the date each year and repost it because it's ain't never going change as long as Asians continue to dislike Japan.
Anyone who thinks Japan have not "adequately or properly" apologized is delusional. What exactly is "adequately or properly" apology? I bet no one can describe it much less express it.
Apology is never going to bring back the dead. Apology is never going to bring back the past. Apology is never going to undo the pain. It times the Asians try forgiveness because apparently, seeking an "adequate or proper" apology has not work. Move on already.
lifeofpee
Hong Kong people dislike the Japanese? Is this article even real?
If Japan starts looking for countries to join them as part of 'Greater Japan', Hong Kong and Taiwan would be first in line!

You people are idiots. Focus on the problem, not something that happened 70 years ago. Do you still hate Germans for 1939? Morons.
Focus on the fact in question. HK'ers don't like mainlanders because they are rude and uncivilized compared to HK society. Its a fair comment because its an accurate observation.
End of story.
lamlm38
JP has never properly apologized for the war crimes they commited and the stupid JP politicians keeps visiting shrines for those same criminals annually!!
What if the Germans never apologized for the war crimes and keep visiting 'allegedly' Adolf Hitler grave or Hermann Goering's or Himmler's..? go figure u SOB!!
Free Jihottie
@lamlm38 Could you describe what exactly is a "proper" apology? Have you ever done it. What does it looks like. How does it feels. Who is the expert on this. Please, I'm being serious. What exactly is a "proper" apology.
Don't waste your time. You don't know. No one knows. So stop asking for something you don't even know what it is. Try forgiveness because "proper" apology haven't worked out for you.

What's not to like about the Japanese? They are clean, polite and respectful. And since we are not bombarded with propaganda about how evil they are there is no enduring animosity either. We don't care what somebody's great grandfather did. How can America, who lost hundreds of thousands, fighting the Japanese in WWII be their best ally now? Well all those bad people are dead and we all move on. Hong Kong people's thinking is far superior in this aspect. You don't see Americans constantly asking the Japanese for an apology for attacking Hawaii do you? Stop acting like children, please.
Rainrain
You'll know how pretentiously polite they are if u check out the following link, pics of inhumane & unimaginable evil committed by Japan's imperial army towards China. Although it is in Chinese, the pictures are self explanatory & has a short description in English. Other rape cases not shown in the link include inserting broken glass into rape victims ****. Pregnant women & children were not excused from rape either. If all this happened to your family & friends, how would you feel? Can you accept lies & denial of the full truth? Can you accept insincere apologies? Can you forgive? Warning, the pictures are disturbing!!!

An apology regardless of how many times it is expressed means nothing when insincere. Japan's political leaders actions contradict their empty apology. Changing facts into lies in their history books for example, changing sentences from 'invading China' into 'going there to help China', describing 'sex slaves' as 'comfort woman is deceitful. Denial of the truth by not fully disclosing the extent of the atrocities & visiting the Yasukuni shrine to pay tribute to A-list war/rape criminals DOES NOT express sincerity at all!
Free Jihottie
And the goons working for Mao then, and the chinese government now, never did anything similar? You are delusional. Like jpinst said, move the fk on already.
It is these attitude that turns many people off about Asians in general. You guys just love your misery. Everybody else moved on. But you guys just sit there with your bitterness. How's that working out for you?
Camel
Obviously you don't know the Japanese well. I deal with them every day together at work and I knew a lot of Japanese when I was a student. You don't see and don't know what they think about the people of the rest of Asia. They are convinced that they are the superior race and all others are substandard. They do not tolerate their own kind mixing with other asian races. They have a name for such people who are not "pure blood". Outside they a polite and pretending but in the inside they despise you. The Japanese still haven't learned and don't see their wrongdoings in Asia until now. All what they remember is Hiroshima and Nagasaki as victims but never as an aggressor. Today over 60% of the Japanese still think that they were right to invade whole Asia. They should take Germany as an example as the Germans do their utmost not to forget and that such kind of atrocities in their past would never happen again. But till present they are convinced that they lost the war and capitulate only because the Americans dropped the bombs. I am sure they would try it again, if they have the chance. Maybe in 100 years.
"You don't see Americans constantly asking the Japanese for an apology for attacking Hawaii do you?'
Yes I do. I have seen a lot of Americans still mentioning the pacific war and how the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbour. Or why do you think they still make Movies like "Pearl Harbour" or the HBO series "The Pacific"? Apology? no need as the eradicated already Hiroshima.
Free Jihottie
You realized that Pearl Harbor movie was made for you guys. The movie bombed in the States.
Everything you said about Japan can be said about every tribes, every nations, and every groups. Japan does not have monopoly on exceptionalism. Except when American claims it, it's based on reality. It would be laughable if China ever made such claim.
The reality is, everything about Japan since the 80s is cool to the rest of the world. China is not cool, not ever. Why is that. Because Japan moved on and progressed. They open themselves to the world. China is left with their inferiority complex and stuck making craps for Wal-Mart.
What happen 70 years ago didn't involved you. So why harbor bitterness for something you weren't part of, unless of course, you're just another mindless Chinese nationalist.

I guess if you ask a long-time Beijinger or Shanghainese of their judgment on migrants (from other cities) living in their midst, the disapproval rating would be equally high.
To the extent the revenue brought in by Mainlanders primarily flow only into the pockets of the richest 1%, they will be resented incessantly.
sipsip1238
I dislike anyone with bad manners or bad hygiene behaviours while in public.
I've seen mainlanders peeing in shopping centres and pooping on the street; and also nicely dressed mainlanders claiming they lost the movie ticket and want a refund still.
I've seen locals talking loudly on the phone when there is no need to; and also witness recently, two old locals trading profanity before trading blows while on a short bus trip.
I've seen westerners coughing on the MTR without any intentions of covering their mouths.
The focus for Hong Kong people should be to focus on the behaviours and not where the people come from, because I can assure you that some people from the mainland that I have had the privilege to have known and worked with hates those behaviours just as much.
People should really think through their hatred and not just go with the herd, you need to understand that it is due to the lack of education and extremely fast wealth gains that causes such a gap between wealth and behaviour, and when you witness such things, the best thing to do is to remind yourself not to act like that.
That said, I have seen some self-perceived wealthy fellows that act with a level of arrogance that ranks among the worse.

i am a HKer and I see HKers are no better than mainlanders. But HKers' superior complexes make them hype mainlanders' bad behaviours but blind to the similarly ugly behaviours of HKers, who are similarly noisy and bad-mannered and step their shoes on the opposite seats in bus.
John Adams
The problem is not so much that Mainland tourists are often bad-mannered (they are, but then so also are many English, American, and many other countries' tourists - except with the notable exception of the Japanese and Singaporean tourists who are always supremely polite)
The problem is that there are simply too many Mainland tourists and they seem to drag their luggage with them all day, everywhere they go.
The "tourism revenue" they bring goes to a very small number of jewelry and designer-label shops, greedy landlords, milk powder double traders... and that's about it.
Don't believe anything the HKTA tells you, because the HKTA itself is ultimately run by the landlords.
.
Meanwhile, our transport system is filled to over-bursting so that local residents are seriously inconvenienced, local HK residents can't go anywhere at weekends without facing huge queues, local shops are put of business, and everything becomes more expensive for everyone.
So how does this mass Mainland tourism help us as normal HK residents?
Whoever decided that the more Mainland tourists the better ad infinitum needs to spend a few weekends doing nothing else except queuing around Ocean Park as a normal tourist, or trying to get a bus back to Tung Chung from Tai O.
No_kidding
Agree as this hits a balanced reality. So when I read the headline that mainland tourists are considering other locations to spend their tourist dollars, it was a dim light at the end of the tunnel. That can't come soon enough, then hopefully, we can focus our attention to building our higher level industries...
HiggsSinglet
Agree, to me, after the mainlander, the americans, particularly the ones from the mid west are very rude
sipsip1238
The idea of more Mainland tourist will be better for the HK economy mainly came from the events of SARS and also the GFC a few years back. The policy was paired with the idea that mainlanders will be allowed to purchase property and support the falling house prices, since that soooo many locals have their wealth and leverage tied to their properties (otherwise, you'll have too many HKers under water and they'll start jumping out of buildings again).
But what the government didn't anticipate was that instead of supporting and stablizing the economy, it pushed it overboard and shot prices to now a level that locals can no longer afford and comfortable living is no longer easy for most families. (avg household income is about 20-25k, which is expected to pay for rent and then feed a family of like 4.)
It is an increasingly worrying problem that trading volume for houses are now non-existent, and it just takes some stressed people to slash prices aggressively to push the market back the other way.
jmmhal8@gmail.com
mr. adams, the luggage mainlanders carry with them are actually oversized wallets. their shopping sprees are usually handled as cash transactions.
anthonygmail
Fail.
One has to question the competence of the surveyor when we are not given data on the age-brackets of the respondents. Of the ~1,000 people, I reckon most would be 20-40's.
Just ask those over 70 who had actually lived under Japanese occupation which people they dislike more.

China was not the only country which suffered badly under Japanese occupation. At some stage one has to realise that the ordinary Japanese citizen today had nothing to do with it.
Blame the perpetrators, not their descendants.

Why blame anybody? China's largest dynasty in terms of land mass was the Yuan dynasty, ruled by Mongolians. Should all country's affected by their expansionary wars hate China now? Where does it end?
The CCP is an illegitimate government that legitimizes itself though nationalism. Anti-Japnese nationalism is a big part of that. That is to say, "You need the CCP to protect you from a resurgent Japan. While China was having its cultural revolution, Japan was selling transistor radios to the West. It's a shame. since the majority of mainlanders are raised in a rural farming environment , it is no surprise that a majority of them will behave like animals when they are outside their natural environment. Such surveys are not good for Hong Kong at all, because when the media reports them, they make Hong Kongers appear as if they don't like anybody and anything. And this then becomes easily the cliché: Hong Kong people don't like the Mainlanders, the Japanese, the Filipinos, the Indonesians, the Singaporeans, the Brittish, and so on.

This woman who spoke mandarin didn't offer an apology and just walked off when I confronted her, instead she told me that "You HK people always kick up a big fuss and think you are better off than us." That's how I realized that she is from PRC. Yes, I am going to fall into the category of 31.8% mentioned in this article if I encounter more ill mannered people like her.
