The body of a newborn girl, still with her umbilical cord attached, was found dumped inside a public toilet block in North Point yesterday.

The baby was found in a black shopping bag that had been left on top of the toilet tank in a cubicle at the female public toilet on Tong Shui Road.

Police were called after a cleaner spotted the suspicious shopping bag at about 1pm.

At first she thought it was rubbish, but when she looked inside she discovered the baby, which was wrapped in pink clothes. The cleaner was shocked to discover the contents.

There was also a black handkerchief in the shopping bag.

The baby, who had bruises on her forehead, was certified dead by paramedics who were called to the scene after the discovery.

Detectives said there were no superficial wounds. They also believed the infant was full-term, but did not know if she had been born alive.

Chief inspector Samuel Lam Siu-wah of Eastern district police, said the baby measured about 50cm long and still had her umbilical cord attached.

"There was no note inside the bag. Nor was there any identification document concerning the baby," he said.

"There appeared to be bruises on the baby's head. But how they were caused still needs to be investigated.

"Our forensic colleagues will help us find out whether the baby was born dead or died after being born and the cause of her death, as well as her ethnicity."
