A suspected triad member who was arrested on suspicion of drug trafficking is on the loose after he escaped from Pat Heung police station yesterday.

Yiu Chiu-fung, 27, had been left unattended in the toilet and ran from the station without anyone noticing, police said. "At the time of his escape, a policeman who was guarding the suspect had left the toilet to help get him some toilet paper," a police source said. "After the officer walked away, he immediately ran out, jumped over the counter of the report room and fled through the front door."

The source said police were looking into whether negligence was involved and would also review security at the station.

Officers failed to find Yiu despite a search around Pat Heung, Yuen Long and Tai Po. He allegedly boarded a Tai Po-bound minibus outside the station.

Yiu is believed to be a member of the 14K triad society. He is broad and stocky, has short hair, and was wearing a light-coloured shirt and carrying a black shoulder bag when he fled.

Officers have appealed for anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to contact police on 3661 1680.

Yiu was arrested shortly past midnight on Thursday after officers seized a packet containing 25 grams of crack cocaine from him when he was stopped and searched outside Kat Hing Wai village on Kam Tin Road.

He was about to be taken to a cell at Pat Heung police station at around 7am when he asked to go to the toilet.
