More than 1,000 mourners crowded into St John's Cathedral in Central last night to remember Sandra d'Auriol, the jewellery designer and philanthropist who died in Los Angeles last month.

Hundreds of well-wishers had to stand through the tribute to the 53-year-old, an influential, well-connected figure among Hong Kong's high society.

Her brother, Mark Spiers, led the tributes, saying: "Her legacy, I believe, will be that of giving, for that is what she did best."

Family friend Meg Paulon read a letter d'Auriol herself wrote after her 12-year-old son drowned in Bali a decade ago.

"For many of you there will be a feeling that you didn't have a goodbye … I can only say that you can do that yourself in your own ways, but really there is no need to say goodbye, because he is always with you," she read.

D'Auriol plunged from the roof of a medical clinic on January 22 after cosmetic surgery. Police are investigating.
