About 100 people were evacuated from the Wan Chai Tower at 1pm today after a fire broke out in a rooftop lift machine room of the 27-floor building. Nobody was injured in the incident although some 13 people were briefly trapped in a lift as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

One woman reported feeling unwell but did not need to be hospitalised.

Eight fire engines and two ambulances arrived to the scene on Harbour Road in Wan Chai after smoke was spotted coming from the machine room at 1pm. The fire was put out by 1.45pm.

Firefighters are now investigating the cause of the incident. A preliminary police investigation found no suspicious circumstances.

About 13 lift passengers were trapped briefly before being rescued by firemen.

The building is home to the Wan Chai law courts. No morning hearings were affected as the fire started during lunch break, according to a member of the courts’ staff.

Some hearings scheduled for this afternoon were delayed as the lift service had not been fully restored after the incident.
