A 70-year-old man with a history of mental illness has jumped to his death in Wong Tai Sin after attacking his 66-year-old wife, according to police.

The elderly man was found dead at around 8:30am on Tuesday morning after jumping from his apartment building in the Wang Tau Hom Estate near to Lion Rock.

Police reported that the man struck his 66-year-old wife on the head with a hard object at around 2am on Tuesday morning before apparently committing suicide.

The man walked up more than 10 floors from his fourth-floor flat at Wang Wai House before jumping from the building, police said.

The wife was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and is in a critical condition. She had also been diagnosed with a mental illness according to police.

It is understood that the married couple had argued on Monday evening. Police said they had no record of any previous reports of violence involving the pair.

A cleaning lady found the dead man’s body on the building’s podium and police were notified at 8:40am, said Detective Superintendent Chow Tak-choi, assistant Wong Tai Sin district police commander.

About the same time, an Indonesian domestic helper who worked for the couple discovered the unconscious and bloodied wife lying on her bed.
